Grime’s Graves – New Access Stairs

Construction - Conservation

Client: English Heritage

Location: Lynford, Thetford

What was our role?

Grime’s Graves is the only Neolithic flint mine open to visitors in Britain. Works consisted of the design, fabrication and installation of a new access stair and associated structural support work to replace the current access ladder in to Pit 1 at Grimes Graves for the English Heritage Trust. Other works included permanent removal of the existing ladder access, alterations & adaptations to the existing concrete cover slab at the position of the existing opening to accommodate the new contractor designed access stair and associated electrical works. A direct contract was commissioned separately to temporarily remove the cabin & railings and their subsequent reinstatement at the pit head as well as disconnection and reconnection of services to the same.
