We were delighted to have completed another successful project for English Heritage. This is the striking new Visitors Centre and Exhibition space at Grimes Graves, Norfolk.
Grimes Graves is a vast complex of pre-historic flint mines dating back 4,500 years and is the oldest human-made underground space in England. We completed the project with the utmost sensitivity in conjunction with English Heritage and archaeologists to ensure the building had the minimal impact on this precious site. Some of the finds on the site include previously unseen flint tools, such as an axe, sickle and circular knife. The innovative design formed a curved entrance ramp and a circular structure. The Architects for the project were Mawsonkerr and the Structural Engineers were Ramboll UK Limited. |

The building was constructed mainly of Douglas Fir supported on a Kingpost piled solution and suspended steel raft, with a zinc roof. One of the projects biggest challenges was the installation of the piles which had to be installed with a tolerance of 5mm to ensure the steel lined up correctly.
